History of Konkani Films

It was Al Jerry Bragauza influenced by the Konkarti novel of Dioguinho D’Mello who decided to do a film in 1949. Within a year the film ‘Mogacho Anvddo’ (Desire of Love) was released on April 24, 1950 at Mapusa.

The second Konkani film ‘Amchem Noxib’ (Our Fate) was released in 1963 under the banner of Frank Films. The film was a super hit. The songs of this film are popular even today.

Film ‘Nirmon’ (Destiny) by Frank Fernandas was released in 1966. This film also was a hit. In 1967, again Al Jerry Braganza released his second film ‘Sukhachem Sopon’ (A Dream of Happiness) under the banner of Helen Productions. This film had melodious music and lyrics by Alfred Rose.

‘Mhoji Ghorkarn’ (My wife) was released in 1969 under the banner of Movierama. In the year 1970 Britona Films came up with its new release ‘Kortubancho Sounsar’ (A world full of incidents). The dialogues of this film were written by legendary novel writer Reginald Fernandes. Soon Ambika Films came out with its film ‘Jivit Amchem Oxem’ (Our life is like this) by Muthu Krishan Das.

In 1975, again Ambika Films came out with another film ‘Boglantt’ (Blame) based on the tiatro ‘No Vacancy’ by Pram Kumar.

In the year 1977 United Youngsters of Mangalore brought out the first colored Konkani film called ‘Mog ani Moipass’ (Love and Affection) with lyrics set by Wilfy Remimbus. Same year Chris Perry and Tony Coutinho brought out another colored film ‘Buierantlo Munis’ (The man from the Caves) under the banner of Chripton Motion Pictures. The film had music by Chris Perry and playback singing by India’s versatile singer Asha Bhosle.

In 1978, Konkan Pictures of Mangalore came out with its film ‘Tisri Chitt’ (The Third Letter). In 1980, the GSB Mandal brought out ‘Tapaswani’ followed by the last film Girestkai (Wealth) by Muthu Krishan Das. The film had Christopher and Meena Leitao for its cast.

In 1981, Saraswat Konkani people brought out ‘Jane Mane’ and in 1982, Priya Productions released ‘Suzane’. This film had lyrics y Alfred Rose ‘and playback singing by Manna Dey and Bhupinder.

Of late, Konkani film culture has come to stay in Goa and a lot of good films like ‘Shitu’, ‘Dekhni Durai’ ‘Aleesha’ (Best Indian regional film award winner), ‘Kanteantlem Ful’ and Prince Jacobs ‘Padri’ have been released.

Adding to the great works in history will be the first Konkani E-Cinema BLACK Nhesop Atanchem Fashion’ (Dressing Black is a fashion) which has a certain freshness, simplicity, originality and informality of dialect in the language used. The film was released on August 10, 2007 at Al Masrah, HawallyAuditorium in Kuwait.
