Kuwait: We all find out that there are people who get more legendary as time goes by.

Anthony San, a well-known Goan singer has been one of the most legendary figures of our times, and his voice quite possibly, still remains the loveliest.

Anthony San, quite remarkably, is a rare artiste who sings in English, Hindi and of course, Konkani.

Originally from Sanvordem but now based in Fatorda, Anthony de Sanvordem, at heart, is a well-known tiatrist.

By profession, though, he worked as a banker for over 35 years as a manager at Dena Bank's Loutolim branch before retiring.

ANTHONY SAN – A BRIEF

Now in his early 60’s, Anthony San does what he loves best – acting and singing.

Anthony's tryst with singing started in school when, as a seven-year-old, he sang a Alfred Rose song with such passion that he got a standing ovation during his Guardian Angel High School cultural program.

There was no stage fright and it gave him confidence that he could stand on his own. It was, however, not until 1975 -- when he was a confident 19-year-old -- that he got his professional break.

ANTHONY SAN’S DEBUT

Remmie Colaco introduced Anthony San in a village tiatr and the rest as they say is history. Anthony was asked to continue singing in other shows staged across the state.

In 1976, Anthony made his debut as an actor in Rosario Dias' tiatr 'Beiman Avoicho Bodmas Put', cast opposite a young and dashing Felcy.

In an interview to Navhind Times some years back, Anthony revealed that he was in greater demand those days than his compatriots because of his singing talent.

“Anyone who could act and sing had a headstart those days,” disclosed Anthony.

“It did not take me much time to capture hearts of the audience with performances in tiatrs like 'Arso' -- where I was cast as a mentally unstable person by Roseferns and sang the delightful 'Ageema' song, 'Panvdde', 'Sant Anton' and 'Goencho Saib', Prince Jacob productions, etc.”

Anthony has done playback singing for films like 'Girestkai', 'Amchi Chuk' and 'Zababdari' amongst others.

The legendary singer has over 10 CDs to his credit.

THE LEGEND BEHIND ANTHONY SAN

When Jose Antonio Agostinho Fernandes first took to the stage as a confident 19-year-old in Remmie Colaco's tiatr 'Don Kallzam', he was known to the tiatr world as Anthony Fernandes.

Anthony and Fernandes were too common to the stage so he Anthony de Sanvordem as his stage name.

Then, one fine day, one name struck him almost by accident.

"While pasting the summary in Aristides Dias' 'Koidi' (criminal), the stage manager wrote Anthony San (short for Sanvordem) in the line-up. I found it quite attractive and stuck to that name," said Anthony San.

That year was 1980 and soon enough a legend was born.

"In 1980, I produced my first album 'Goa' and I used Anthony San as my stage name. Everyone liked it and I have never felt the need to look at other (stage) names ever since."

Since his first album in 1980, Anthony has touched the lives of his fans for almost 4 decades. He has achieved almost everything but feels there is still scope for some more.
