After almost 25 years of service in Kuwait, one of the most respected Goans is bidding farewell to a chapter that has been a blend of hard work, challenges, and growth.
As the city of Kuwait continues to hum with life, the farewell marks the end of an era, for Xavier, to a retired life in ‘Amchem Goa’.
A HUMBLE BEGINNING
For Xavier, like many others from Goa, the decision to move was not an easy one, but driven by a vision of better prospects, Xavier ventured into the unknown. Little did he know that his journey would span over two decades in this land of the ‘extremes’.
Kuwait, at the time of his arrival, was beginning to witness a significant transformation. The oil boom had fueled the economy, and the country was rapidly expanding its infrastructure, which led to a booming demand for skilled professionals from across the globe.
Goa, with its legacy of resilience and adaptability, had already become a significant contributor to this wave of skilled labor, and the Goan community was well-established.
Armed with expertise in his field and a willingness to adapt to a new culture, Xavier quickly found his footing in the competitive landscape of Kuwait’s workforce.
EARLY LIFE
An alumni of St. Xavier’s Velim and Damodar College, Margao, Xavier holds an MBA in Finance.
Infact, Xavier first landed in the Middle East in 1991 and served for Taylor Woodrow Int’l in Saudi Arabia till 1998 as a Senior Accountant. His services found him deputed to countries such as Qatar, Oman, UAE and Bahrain on lengthy assignments.
He arrived in Kuwait in June 2000 and has been working with Gulf Dredging & General Contracting Co. Kuwait, a premier construction firm from Year 2001 as Manager of Finance and Accounting.
PASSION FOR KONKANI DRAMAS
Xavier’s passion to act on stage saw him act in Late Fr. Neville Gracias’s presentations in Goa before arriving in Kuwait.
While in Kuwait, he acted for prominent directors among them being Rafael de Majorda, Donald Colaco, Joe Ferreira, Rosary Ferns and Fidelis Fernandes. His last act was in Fidelis’ drama ‘Kuwaitchi Mati’ staged in October 2024.
Acting apart, Xavier played hockey for College at Damodars, and also represented Goa University and Velim in local and state level tournaments.
He was also heavily involved in football and has been President of AVC Overseas Association, Kuwait, a champion club of Kuwait known for organizing International tournaments in Dubai and Kuwait, and Vice-President of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF).
Happily married to Clansy, Xavier is blessed with 2 children – daughter Jade and son Lyle. Jade is a Fashion Designer and owner of Jade Furtado Label boutique in Margao while Lyle works as a Project Manager with Grandworks Ltd, a multi- national IT firm.
A QUARTER-CENTURY OF SERVICE
Xavier’s career trajectory in Kuwait was nothing short of inspiring.
Starting in a humble position, he climbed the ladder through sheer dedication, work ethic, and adaptability. His expertise and positive attitude quickly earned him respect, not only within his organization but also within the wider expatriate community in Kuwait.
His work was always infused with a sense of duty—an understanding that he wasn’t just building a career, but also contributing to the nation’s prosperity.
Yet, despite the rigorous demands of work, this Goan never lost sight of his roots. Over the years, he remained an active part of the Goan community in Kuwait, participating in cultural events, and supporting charitable initiatives, and being a mentor to younger generations of Goans who followed in his footsteps.
His story has become one of those that is often shared among families -- a tale of hard work and resilience, and also of giving back to the community.
CHALLENGES AND TRIUMPHS
Xavier recounts that one of the biggest challenges was the constant balancing act between his professional life in Kuwait and maintaining deep connections with his family back in Goa.
With the advances in technology, he could stay connected with loved ones, but it never quite replaced the joy of being physically present. Yet, every visit home became an opportunity to share stories, learnings, and dreams.
One of the most poignant moments in his journey was the tragic loss of his mother back home in 2023. Although he was there by her side during her last days, such a significant loss was a heart-wrenching experience, but it also solidified his belief in the importance of family and staying grounded.
THE ROAD AHEAD
As Xavier bids farewell to Kuwait, this Goan does so with mixed emotions. On one hand, he looks back on nearly a quarter-century of personal and professional growth, with a sense of accomplishment and pride. On the other, there is a lingering sadness at leaving behind a life that has become deeply intertwined with the culture and fabric of Kuwait.
But this is not goodbye forever. Kuwait will always hold a special place in his heart, as will the friends, colleagues, and community that shaped his life over the years.
As he heads back to Goa, there is excitement about reuniting with family and exploring new opportunities in our State. Yet, the lessons learned and the friendships forged in Kuwait will forever remain with him.
A LASTING LEGACY
The Goan community’s contribution to Kuwait has been immeasurable, and the farewell of one of its stalwarts is a reminder of the sacrifices, hard work, and dedication of all expatriates who have made Kuwait their second home.
Xavier’s farewell isn’t just a personal milestone—it’s a tribute to the hard work that defines the journey of so many Goans in the Gulf.
As the respected Goan steps into the future, Xavier leaves behind not just memories, but a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
Goan community in Kuwait wishes Xavier Furtado blessings and a great life ahead.
