GoaWorld - A Voice No More

By Gasper Crasto

The news of Gaspar Almeida’s passing on 11th March 2026 has left a silence that words struggle to fill.

For decades, he stood as one of the towering Goan voices in Kuwait - a man who believed that distance could never dilute identity.

Through his pen and his relentless dedication to Goan journalism, he carried the stories, struggles, and spirit of Goa far beyond its shores, connecting Goans across continents.

What began as a mission to keep a scattered community informed grew into a lifeline that bound global Goans together.

Today, as we mourn the loss of this remarkable Goan, we also remember a man whose words built bridges between homeland and diaspora, ensuring that wherever Goans lived, the pulse of Goa was never too far away.

A DEDICATED VOICE

Gaspar Almeida’s determination has long set him apart within the vibrant Goan and Indian community.

Over the years, few Goan organizations have flourished without his touch - whether through sports like football and cricket or through cultural and social initiatives.

With a gentle smile, he often reflected on many Goans now in leadership roles, saying, “I nominated, groomed, and guided several of them over the years.”

Educated in Bombay and Goa, Gaspar completed his schooling at an early age before graduating from D.M’s College of Commerce in Mapusa.

LIFE IN KUWAIT

In 1981, he moved to Kuwait to join the M.S. Al-Essa Group, continuing a family legacy begun by his father. After further professional training in London, he later rose to become Department Head in the International Marketing Division of the M.A. Al-Kharafi Group -earning respect for his efficiency, openness, and dedication.

Beyond his professional career, Gaspar became a pioneering force in Goan digital media.

Together with another Goan called Ulysses Menezes, he helped launch the first Gulf-Goans e-newsletter in 1994 and, in 2000, introduced the world’s first international Konkani online music station through the Goa-World platform - an initiative that connected Goans across continents.

A passionate community builder, Gaspar holds the distinction of being the longest-serving elected Honorary General Secretary of the Goan Welfare Society in Kuwait.

His service spans numerous organizations, including the Kuwait Indian Football Federation, Saligao Sports Club, and several cultural and charitable bodies.

GOA DAY PATRONIZER

He also played a key role in popularizing the global celebration of ‘GOA DAY,’ helping it spread from Kuwait to Goan communities worldwide.

A devoted reader and writer, Gaspar has contributed widely to Konkani and English publications and reported on community events in Kuwait.

His short story Another Sunday, inspired by village life in Parra, Goa, has been translated into more than fifteen languages - reflecting the universal warmth of its simple narrative.

FAMILY LIFE

Married to Dorothy DeSouza Almeida, an accomplished academic and professional, Gaspar is a proud father to Dwane (working as a Mechanical Engineer in Switzerland) and Charmaine Melrose, a doctor by profession.

Though life took him across many countries, Gaspar Almeida’s heart never left Goa. After retiring, just before COVID, he returned home and spent his days where he always truly belonged.

His life is more than a list of achievements - it is a story of purpose. Gaspar never sought titles or recognition; his greatest joy was seeing fellow Goans rise, succeed, and stay proud of who they are.

His legacy carries a quiet truth: serving your community is worth more than personal success.

For Gaspar, being Goan was never just about where he was born - it was about protecting the culture, lifting others, and keeping the spirit of Goa alive wherever Goans live.

Whether in Kuwait today or Goa tomorrow, his life reminds us of one simple thing: the greatest fulfillment is serving your own people.❤️
