From Goa to India's Glory

By Gasper Crasto...02 Oct 2026

Some footballers play the game.

Some footballers win trophies.

And then there are those rare footballers who leave behind memories that refuse to retire.

Today, on his birthday, we celebrate one such Goan -  Jules Alberto Dias, our own Salgaocar hero, former Indian international, midfield magician, loving husband, proud father and, these days, a British citizen making his home in London with his sweet wife Ruksana and their two sons, Ethan and Nate.

But, Jules, let us be honest - London may have given you a British passport, but Goa will never give you an exit visa! 😄

For us who grew up around the golden era of Salgaocar Football Club, Jules was never merely another name on the team sheet. He was part of that beautiful generation when wearing the green-and-white jersey meant carrying the pride of Goa on your shoulders.

As Jules himself once beautifully said about Salgaocar, “The club is my identity and part of a beautiful history.”

That sentence says everything.

FROM GREEN TO THE BLUE TIGERS

Jules's football journey is a story of talent, determination and, perhaps, a little bit of divine football planning.

He was part of the Salgaocar side that won the 1997 Federation Cup, under the demanding influence of coach Chathunni. Jules later recalled how Chathunni pushed the players to abandon the relaxed Goan approach and play with greater aggression and intensity.

Those were the days when football was not about Instagram followers, expensive boots or players checking their GPS statistics.

You ran. You fought. You tackled. You sweated. And if necessary, you came home with mud on your face and still told your mother, “Mummy, we won!”

That was football.

That was Salgaocar.

And that was Jules.

_______

A Salgaocar Legend Who Made India Believe

_______

His biggest international chapter came on 8 April 2001, at Bengaluru's Kanteerava Stadium.

India faced a highly rated UAE side in the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Against the odds, India won 1–0, and the man who wrote his name permanently into Indian football folklore was Jules Alberto Dias.

71st minute. One goal. One historic victory.

The AIFF itself describes that strike as an indelible chapter in Indian football history.

For generations of Indian football lovers, that goal is more than a statistic.

It is a memory.

And Jules will have many more playing alongside Indian greats such as Bhaichung Bhutia, I. M. Vijayan, Jo Paul Ancheri, Franky Barreto, Bruno Coutinho, etc.

Apart from India, and Salgaocars, Jules played for Dempo, Mahindra, Fransa Pax, Vasco SC and MPT.

PLAYED. LEARNED. INSPIRED.

Perhaps one of the most admirable things about Jules is that his education did not stop when his football career ended.

His journey has moved far beyond the football pitch.

After moving to England in 2006, Jules built a professional career while continuing to develop himself within football. He completed his UEFA B Licence in coaching and Level 1 in Sports Psychology, while also coaching the youth.

His professional profile also records further development through the Kent FA, where he undertook football-coaching education, alongside professional courses.

And there is something beautiful about that.

The player became the teacher.

That is what makes a true sportsman.

ALWAYS A GOAN

Today Jules lives in England.

He has built a life away from the floodlights of Indian football, but he has never really left football.

For the Salgaocar family, birthdays like this are not merely occasions to say “Happy Birthday.”

They are occasions to reopen an old football album.

We remember the dressing rooms.

The team buses.

The muddy boots.

Training on the beaches.

The arguments.

The jokes after victories.

The silence after defeats.

And that wonderful feeling of during that era of Salgaocars at the prime. We may have had talented individuals, but what made Salgaocar special was the brotherhood.

And Jules was an important part of that brotherhood.
