Riana Azavedo to leave an impact with 'Black'

By Gasper Crasto, Kuwait

Kuwait, Aug 7, 2007: A rare beauty, she has that striking mixture of confidence and sensuality that causes people to stare and wonder. She has the currently fashionable ethnically vague look of someone you feel you should know.

She is Riana Azavedo, one of the new face to feature in 'BLACK Nhesop Atanchem Fashion' - the first Konkani E-Cinema set for release on August 10, 2007 at Masrah, Hawalli Auditorium.

Riana plays 'Shirley', a young wife. Her role is a caricature seen with the new generation of women. Riana will, in all likelihood, remove whatever doubt remains about her acting aptitude. It will also provide an avenue of exposure for the young actress among a genre of budding actresses.

Coming from Dabal, Goa, Riana has always taken part in plays and musicals during her schooling at Guardian Angel High School and also in her parish back home. She graduated from Chowgule College of Arts and Science, Margao before coming to Kuwait to be with the family.

Riana's self-confidence is bolstered by the support of her parents Inacina and Constancio Azavedo, and brothers Avito and Jovito -- her biggest fans. "My mother has been instrumental in encouraging and preparing me mentally," she says.

About her debut role in movies, the actress says, "I am so excited just being in BLACK. What's exciting about the role is that it is a finicky 'modern-wife' role. But unlike the symbolic 'modern and qualified' women portrayed in our Konkani dramas, I am not howling at the moon, tearing the furniture apart or bossing the world. My character is very restricted."

Riana who is also a versatile dancer expects to some day be able to give singing and dancing more attention. Dancing has had to take a back seat because acting is where everything has been happening for her. Kuwait based director Anthony Carr gave her the first break on stage at the one-act plays competitions in his play . She also did a dance sequence in Comedian Philip's musical 'Tum Voir Hanv Sokol' and acted in Joe Fereira's drama 'Amche Modem Jielo'.

Talking about the director of BLACK, Riana says, "T-Bush is T-Bush. His ideas are way different than what we can even imagine. I think that makes him a winner. That explains why his English short film 'The Letter' won him an International Best Film Award. He will definitely have something of international appreciation for the audience than what is being shown in the cheap, sub-standard home videos that are marketed nowadays. In the long run, these home-videos may even destroy the image of our dramas and standard. The highest respect I give for T-Bush is because he is everything behind the making of BLACK. He is the writer-director-producer-Cinematographer-editor, etc, etc. He is incredible."
