Kuwait: Goans living in
Kuwait come from different Goan villages and have long made a mark as leaders in
their own right.
Here is a profile of a dynamic Goan hailing from the famous village of Chinchinim, Goa.
For ages, writers, poets and singers in Goa have praised the village of Chinchinim for the wealth of personalities originating from this place. People of this village are still known as ‘firngi’ meaning ‘foreigners’ mainly because of their well-educated, cultured and sometimes chauvinistic qualities.
Chinchinim, once, was called a harvest place of priests as a number of priests originated from this village. Apart from talented actors, musicians and artistes, Chinchinim is known to have given India a number of world class footballers too.
Among thousands of Goans living in Kuwait is Mr. Bosco Leitao, a dynamic Goan from Chinchinim, much known for his outstanding contribution towards Goa and Goans.
Bosco Leitao has been the President of CRC Chinchinim club, for a number of years.
Born on 31st January 1950 at the Margao Hospicio Hospital, Bosco was brought up in Bombay as his parents were settled there. He completed his education at Bandra’s Fr. Agnel Technical School and always dreamed of taking up significant tasks in life especially for the betterment of the society.
A strong lover of the football game, Bosco says, “I used to travel to Cooperage all the way from Kurla to watch Goan teams play.”
In the year 1972, at the age of 22, Bosco arrived in Kuwait and took up a job with Sadoon Al Yaqoub Real Estate. Bosco still works with the same company for more than 4 decades now. He manages and works with great enthusiasm. The owner of the company died and his sons run the business now. They treat Bosco respectfully, as one of their own family member. Not many people are fortunate to get this kind of treatment from their employers in this part of the world.
Apart from being heavily involved in Goan activities, Bosco is known to lend a helping hand for a number of Goan causes, and also assist many who approach him with their problems or difficulties. He has helped many a brother, unable to meet ends, to find a stable job or go back home to our motherland.
In 1992, along with a number of villagers, Bosco headed and formed the Cultural and Recreational Club of Chinchinim. The club is quite popular among Goans. As the name indicates, CRC Chinchinim remains a socio-cultural sports club for Chinchonkars and Goans based in Kuwait.
Founded in 1992, by only a handful of Chinchonkars, CRCC Kuwait started initially as a football club and alos founded the CRC football tournament. The club is very popular for their annual ‘Athlete of the Year’ award which is bestowed on the best Indian sportsman, particularly in football, based in Kuwait.
CRCC had established a scholarship fund for the bright and upcoming students of the Chinchinim village. This scholarship is awarded every year to Chinchinim’s top students in all the various schools in the village back home.
In addition to helping the village, the club has also aided other organizations when in need. This has not been limited to Goan organizations or needs only. The club also looks after its members in Kuwait and uses its collective influence to assist everyone.
Apart from being magnetic in football activities, the club organizes get-togethers and numerous social events in Kuwait. It is the CRCC Annual Christmas Fiesta that gets more attention, popular among Goan children for the festivities, games and presents from Santa.
Under the president-ship of Bosco Leitao, the fiesta is magnificently organized annually with festive décor and ambience to match with the joy and merriment of Christmas season. Bosco Leitao has been the unprecedented President of the club for all these years and remains a significant force behind the unity of members, activities and success of the club.
CRCC, mainly through Mr. Bosco, has earned a lot of recognition for its achievements in Kuwait. And surely the best is yet to come!
Bosco Leitao lives a comfortable life in Kuwait with wife Jessy Leitao, working for Petrochemicals Industries Company (PIC). He is blessed with 2 children – son Olvin Leitao married to Astrid Fernandes, and daughter Crystal Leitao.
The dynamic Goan celebrated his 64th birthday on 31st January, quiet as always, in the company of his family.
The Goan community in Kuwait wishes Mr. Bosco Leitao, a dedicated Goan son, a great future ahead and a long-long, healthy and joyful life.
God bless you Bosco!
