This Hindi-film starring Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher and Pallavi Joshi has created a historic buzz since its release on 11th March 2022.
Cinema-starved filmgoers, who have forgotten what a cinema-hall looks like for ages due to Covid, are back thronging the theatres in large numbers.
Goa and the world are no different. I heard INOX-Panjim has huge queueueueues like never before.
While the govt all over India is planning tax-free viewing given the film’s massive appeal, some experts predict the film could ‘hurt the sentiments of Muslims and can trigger an unwanted violence against Muslims’.
Some believe the film might go on to become the biggest block-buster of our times, and may even win an Oscar.
WHAT IS THE HYPE ALL ABOUT?
As the title suggests, the film is based on true events of the large-scale exodus of Kashmiri Pandits (Saraswat Brahmin Hindu community) from Kashmir in the 1990s.
The film highlights the hardship of hundreds of victims who died, as well as countless others who were forced to flee their homes and relocate to other parts of India.
The truth, sentiments and scenes shown in the film are heart-wrenching, reviewers say, which is what makes the film sentimental, patriotic, and mind-blowing.
STORY BEHIND THE KASHMIR FILES
Following India’s independence in 1947, the territorial issue in Jammu and Kashmir has been a never-ending issue of war, with riots and other forms of political violence claiming thousands of lives.
The situation worsened after a 1975 agreement between then-Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Kashmiri politician Farooq Abdullah, which obliged Kashmir to ensure the state’s full merger into India.
However, pro-Kashmir independence militants or separatist groups used violence and intimidation techniques to push back, while Farooq Abdullah’s participation in the Islamization of Kashmir worsened the situation.
WHAT IS SHOWN IN THE MOVIE?
In 1990, murder, rape, and the migration of Kashmiri Hindus followed, eternally tainting the land with the blood of innocent men, women, and children.
Farooq Abdullah is said to be a part of the conspiracy to perform ‘genocide’ of Kashmiri Hindus.
IS THE MOVIE ON NETFLIX?
Netflix does not have ‘The Kashmir Files.’ The picture is unlikely to be released on the platform soon.
BEST WAY TO WATCH THE KASHMIR FILES
So far, the film is screened only in cinemas, it is not available on any other OTT platform.
Usually, I used to hack into any of the free-online movie webs, and watch the latest ones for free. But looks like everyone has to watch this film in theaters, piracy is strictly checked by the producers.
Here, Kuwait has just started full-capacity cinemas, however, since January they are still showing Al-Pacino classic ‘The Godfather’, 'American Siege' , and 'Radhe Shyam' .
Not so sure an orthodox Muslim country like Kuwait will screen 'The Kashmir Files' in theatres without censoring majority of the 'files', if they do decide to screen.
Nevertheless, it will be Man United v/s Athletic Madrid at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’, tonite in the Champions League.
