Backlash On Goan Politics Expected

Tiatr, Goa drama
By Gasper Crasto
Kuwait: They say, before 1961, Tiatr was NEVER a tiatr of political protest.
Most Tiatr and Tiatrists during the colonial rule, accepted the Portuguese and the special benefits accrued to being citizens of Portuguese Goa. (Many Goans, still regret losing the Portuguese).
Since liberation in 1961, things have changed in this respect. Tiatr now has a growing element of political as well as social protest.
Fire-brand Goan writer Shri A Veronica Fernandes writes, “Through Tiatro we got justice in society because it became a very powerful method of obtaining justice from any authority taking interest in Goa.”
Nowadays, the ‘kantorist’ who receives most applause is the one who lampoons politics and politicians the most.
RISE OF POLITICAL SINGERS
Among ‘political’ singers who are known to draw some of the biggest applause is popular star Seby de Divar, a singer who has created a niche for himself in the Goan drama world.
Saby is greatly admired for his powerful songs and especially for his interaction with the audience with mini-sermons.
Saby sings on socio-political issues bringing to the fore political wrongdoings. He tries to open the eyes of people to the wrongs of our politicians, and has become a huge hit with the audience.
The young singer has travelled across the Gulf, UK and other countries. He visited Kuwait twice last year and received huge applaud for his songs, and for his dedication to Konkani stage.
On an average, Saby sings for atleast 4 different dramas a week. His popularity can be noted from the many youtube videos, VCDs and audios available under his name.
Saby de Divar comes from an acting genealogy with his late father Pascoal Tome Dias being an accomplished actor, and his wife Tracila Dias, a stage actress as well.
Saby also acknowledges his mother Maria Dias, and children Aushmin and Zia as his constant pillars of success.

The much admired singer will be seen once again on stage in the Silver Jubilee drama of ‘Maim Pai Tim Maim Pai’ written by Shri Domnic Fernandes.
